AAA projects a record 72.2 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the Independence Day holiday period, setting a new July 4 travel record.
The 2026 forecast spans two weekends, from Saturday, June 27 to Sunday, July 5, to more accurately capture travel trends. This year’s Independence Day is also America’s semiquincentennial, marking the nation’s 250th birthday.
The volume of projected travelers this year would be an increase of almost 500,000 travelers compared to 2025, with families expected to use all modes of transportation — though road trips remain the most popular and affordable, according to AAA Travel, with 85% of travelers expecting to utilize a vehicle.
“For many Americans, traveling the week of July 4th is tradition,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel. “The 9-day travel forecast includes travelers who are vacationing all week and people just getting away for the long holiday weekend. While the overall number of Independence Day travelers appears to be plateauing, we’re still expecting record volumes this year.”
By Car: Road trips still reign
AAA expects 61.4 million people will travel by car over the holiday — nearly the same number as last year, despite the rise in gas prices. According to AAA, , the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.15 in 2025.
To avoid disruptions, AAA recommends drivers get routine vehicle maintenance before hitting the road. Fuel costs may fluctuate during the travel window. Rental car demand will also spike, with July 2 expected to be the busiest day for pick-ups, according to Hertz.
By Air: Record-breaking number of flyers
Air travel is expected to hit a new high, with 5.85 million people flying over the holiday week — a 0.2% increase from 2025. Flyers will account for roughly 8% of all travelers. AAA reports the average roundtrip domestic flight will cost $830.
By Bus, Train, or Cruise: Significant growth
Travelers choosing buses, trains, or cruises are expected to total 4.93 million, a 5.3% increase over 2025. Cruises are particularly popular around the Fourth of July, with Alaska cruises drawing major demand during this season.
