The two-day state indoor track and field championships proved to be a showcase for Section 1 athletes, who medaled in multiple events both days.
Included were championship performances by Rockland athletes. Suffern’s 4×200 boys relay squad, North Rockland’s Claudel Chery in the boys 1,600 and Pearl River’s JD Lloyd McKenna in the boys 1,000 all won gold.
Lloyd McKenna, who went on to win silver at Nike Indoor Nationals and who previously medaled at the Millrose Games, is this year’s Rockland Boys Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
Below find a recap of his winter and a full list of this year’s Rockland indoor boys all-stars.
JD Lloyd McKenna
Rockland Boys Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year
School: Pearl River
Year: Senior
Highlights: Lloyd McKenna, who’ll run next year for the Div. I University of Rhode Island, had a winter to remember. He ran personal-best times at four distances. A year after finishing a frustratingly close second at 1,000 meters at the state indoor championships among public school runners and third in the overall state Federation (all schools), McKenna won both the state public schools and state Federation 1,000-meter titles at the state championships despite being ill and not training in the days leading up to the race. “I wanted it more than anything,” he said. He also finished second at Nike Indoor Nationals at 800 meters and medaled in fourth place at the prestigious Millrose Games in the boys 600-meter championship. His top indoor 800 time is second all-time in the state and first all-time in Section 1. His best 1,000 time is second all-time in Rockland County, fifth all-time in Section 1 and ninth all-time in the state. And his top 600 time is also third all-time in Rockland and seventh all-time in Section 1.
