Elmira police have arrested a suspected parole absconder on attempted murder and other charges in connection to an early morning shooting in the city that injured two people on July 5.
Acting on a warrant following a Chemung County grand jury indictment, Elmira police on July 10 charged Benjamin N. Green, 26, on felony charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, second-degree assault and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Green, who was taken into custody on July 9 as a parole absconder from New Jersey, was arraigned in Chemung County Court on July 11 and remanded to the county jail, Elmira law enforcement officials said.
Bail was set at $750,000 cash or $1.5 million bond.
According to police, investigators developed Green as a suspect in the days following the post-July 4 incident.
Police said officers arrived in the area of Broadway Avenue and Mount Zoar Street shortly after 1 a.m. on July 5 following a report of a large disturbance, with a crowd of over 100 people reportedly gathered in the streets.
Police were told a firearm was involved, and they found a group of people at the intersection aiding a man in the road who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
Other officers arriving at the scene observed a black truck leave the area at a high rate of speed, police said. Elmira officers followed the vehicle to the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, where they discovered that the male driver had also suffered a gunshot wound to his left thigh.
According to the initial investigation, the man found down in the street was the intended target of the shooting, while the other victim was a bystander struck by a stray bullet, police said.
Elmira police thanked the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, the Elmira Heights Police Department, the West Elmira Police Department, the Horseheads Police Department, New York State Police, the New Jersey State Parole Board, the Elmira Fire Department and Erway Ambulance for their assistance.
Anyone who has further information is urged to contact the Elmira Police Department at 607-737-5626 or the Tip Line at 271-HALT.
