Why prices are falling
Gas prices began to ease following a drop in oil prices tied to a temporary ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. Crude oil is currently trading below $100 per barrel, ranging between $88 and $94.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gasoline demand has increased while overall supply has declined. Production, however, is rising.
Retail gas prices typically fall more slowly than oil prices, as stations sell fuel purchased earlier at higher costs.
Diesel, EV charging rates
Diesel prices remain elevated. The national average is $5.53 per gallon, compared with $3.57 a year ago. In New York, diesel averages $5.92, up from $3.91 last year.
For electric vehicles, the national average cost at public Level 2 chargers is 41 cents per kilowatt-hour, down 1 cent. New York’s average remains at 40 cents. The state has more than 20,600 public chargers.
Tips to save on fuel
AAA recommends drivers plan routes, avoid peak traffic, combine trips and use cruise control when possible. Keeping tires properly inflated and removing excess weight from vehicles can also improve fuel efficiency.
