A man described as in his mid 20s died after being struck by a New Jersey Transit train in Rockland County’s Nanuet on Wednesday, Metropolitan Transportation Authority police said.
At about 2: 55 p.m. Wednesday, according to information from MTA police, west of the Metro-North Railroad Nanuet station a person not authorized to be on the tracks was struck by a southbound NJ Transit train operating on Metro-North’s Pascack Valley line, as it entered the Nanuet station. The person was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:09 p.m. by local medical personnel.
The train was traveling about 25 mph, which the MTA’s release said was appropriate speed for that location, at time of impact. Six passengers and three crew members were on board, but no injuries were reported on the train. No criminality is suspected, based on video evidence, according to the MTA police’s information.
MTA police have led the investigation, which is in preliminary stages.
MTA police and NJ Transit officials could be seen investigating the area near the Nanuet train station Wednesday evening.
Pascack Valley train service was temporarily suspended during the investigation and substitute bus service was provided, the MTA said.
Clarkstown police were at the scene of the incident in Nanuet Wednesday, which occurred near Prospect Street. The roadway was closed in both directions until further notice, Clarkstown police said Wednesday on Facebook.
