Looking for a family-fun summer trip where you don’t have to leave the state?
Well, you’re in luck, as New York was ranked the fourth-best state for summer road trips, a new WalletHub study found.
Summer is usually the preferred season for road trips as kids are out of school and the warm weather offers more opportunities to explore. In 2026, around 72% of adults are planning to take a road trip, with over one-third of those adults planning to take more than one, according to WalletHub.
Though road trips are a hot commodity in the summer, the national average for gas prices remains above $4.50 a gallon, according to WalletHub, which could create a price barrier among the inflated prices of accommodations, activities and dining options.
“Taking a summer road trip can be a very exciting way to experience a new place, but with the prices of gas, food and accommodations still impacted by inflation, you’ll want to be in a state that makes this type of vacation affordable,” WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo said. “The best states for summer road trips therefore are those that keep costs low while providing the best driving experience and most fun activities.”
To help road trippers figure out where to get the best bang for their buck and overall experience this summer, WalletHub compared all 50 states across 32 metrics to determine the best road trip destinations based on fun, scenery and affordability. WalletHub also compared these metrics to determine which states road trippers should skip this summer.

Why is NY a good state for summer road trips?
New York ranked among the best states for summer road trips, scoring the No. 4 spot with an overall score of 58.88, according to WalletHub.
The Empire State scored the No. 13 spot for the safety rank and the No. 3 spot for the activities rank.
New York is known for its many scenic routes, waterfalls, lakes and state parks, but it can be more costly than other states. The study ranked NY No. 42 for the cost ranking, indicating it’s among the most expensive states for summer road trips.
