New York Giants will open 2025 regular season vs. Washington Commanders

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are in a do-or-die situation in 2025. If the team isn’t successful this year, both could be looking for new jobs in 2026.

Neither of them wants that to happen, which is evident by how they worked the 2025 NFL draft. They brought in talented players in areas of need and may have found their next franchise quarterback, plus made some key additions through free agency.

No one will truly know how effective they were until the season begins, which we’ve been hearing about in droves over the last couple of days.

The NFL is set to release the full regular season schedule on Wednesday evening at 8:00 p.m. ET, but we’ve already learned that the Giants will open their season on the road against the Washington Commanders, per Art Stapleton.

Week 1: Mr. Carter goes to WashingtonWe’re hearing that rookie Abdul Carter and the Giants will open the season at FedEx Field against Jayden Daniels and the Commanders, who finished his rookie campaign one game from the Super Bowl. With the Cowboys and the Eagles playing on Opening Night, the two other NFC East foes will clash in Landover. It’s a big test out of the gates for Big Blue, but the pressure – maybe for the first time in a while between these two teams – should be on Washington.

The Commanders boast last year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year, Jayden Daniels, as their starting quarterback. Daniels changed the way teams look at the Commanders. The two teams split the 2022 regular season, 1-1, but the Giants won both meetings in 2023. Then, Daniels hit the scene, and the Commanders won both meetings in 2024.

Despite playing very well in 2024, the Commanders have a lot to prove in 2025. They have to prove that last season wasn’t a fluke, that things within the organization have truly changed, and that they can be taken seriously again. The Giants need to win out of desperation, but losing a Week 1 matchup against a division rival on the road? There are worse things that can happen.

The Giants are likely to start Russell Wilson at quarterback to start the season, but there’s still a door open to a different outcome. No matter who lines up under center, though, you can be sure that Big Blue is going to show up, and Abdul Carter will undoubtedly be gunning for Daniels throughout the game.
