New York Giants training camp: Stock report after Week 1

The New York Giants wrapped up their first week of training camp on Sunday with their fourth practice in an overcast East Rutherford.

The pads haven’t come on yet — that will happen on Monday — but the intensity picked up each day with players fiercely competing out on the field. The vibe is different from what it has been in recent years, and that has led to more optimism than pessimism.

Things were understandably sloppy early on, but each unit got sharper with each rep taken before closing things out with a very spirited practice on Sunday morning.

Whose stock is up and whose stock is down after one week of training camp? And who hasn’t moved the needle?

Stock up: WR Malik Nabers

Despite missing spring workouts with a toe injury that may eventually require surgery, wide receiver Malik Nabers has put on a show. He hauled in three touchdowns on the first day of camp and hasn’t slowed a bit since then. He’s been lighting things up, particularly with Russell Wilson under center, and appears poised for an even more spectacular season than he posted in 2024.

Stock down: OL John Michael Schmitz

It’s hard to gauge offensive linemen until the pads come on, but it was a brutal week for center John Michael Schmitz. Not only was he completely destroyed by rookie linebacker Abdul Carter at one point, but he’s also had several issues snapping the football. It’s not a concern that has arisen at this point in his career, but it’s something to keep a close eye on this summer. An improved quarterback room won’t make a difference if JMS can’t cleanly get them the ball at the snap point.

Stock up: LB Abdul Carter

What even needs to be said about rookie Abdul Carter? All anyone has to do is watch highlights from each practice (or attend live), and his dominance is so obvious that no one would have to tell you. It doesn’t matter where he lines up or who is assigned to block him; he finds a way around it. Carter might be even better than advertised. He will be a problem for opponents.

Stock down: WR Jalin Hyatt

After an impressive spring, where he returned with a renewed commitment and added muscle, wide receiver Jalin Hyatt has been hit with some bad luck. He suffered a hamstring injury during minicamp and then left practice this past Thursday with cramping and “tightness.” He did not participate on Friday, was limited on Sunday, and can’t afford to lose practice days with so much left to prove and young receivers breathing down his neck.

Stock up: CB Nic Jones

There aren’t many spots available on the 53-man roster, and if a depth player has designs on stealing one, they have to make their presence felt. Cornerback Nic Jones certainly did that this week, not only with a pick-6 in the team’s first practice, but also at several other points over the first four days. He recorded two sacks on blitzes, had another pass breakup on Sunday, and even when he surrenders a reception, he makes it difficult for the receiver.

Stock down: QB Tommy DeVito

Quarterback Tommy DeVito has done nothing wrong on the field or in the meeting rooms, but that only serves to highlight the unfortunate situation he’s in. With four quarterbacks on the roster and all three roster spots ahead of him locked in, there’s little DeVito can do this summer. His time in East Rutherford is likely winding down, whether that’s this year or next, and his 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 reps have been limited.

Mixed: QB Jaxson Dart

After a stellar day on Sunday, it’s tough to put rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart in the “mixed” spot. He navigated rough waters early on, but settled into his own as the week wore on. The pendulum drastically swung from rookie growing pains to “this is clearly the QB of the future.” His stock is technically on the rise, but only after it fell early on. Seeing how he performs with the pads on will be key.
