Nets' Michael Porter Jr., Sean Marks discuss contract extension

NEW YORK — The Brooklyn Nets are finally done with the 2025-26 NBA season and now, they can focus on building their team this offseason with the goal of being better next year. Brooklyn has plenty of matters to address this offseason, such as getting lucky in the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery, but they also have to figure out their future with forward Michael Porter Jr.

“I think the summer there’s going to be a lot of those discussions, whether it’s with Michael, there’s a variety of decisions we have to make with a variety of our players on the team,” Nets general manager Sean Marks said during his end-of-season press conference on Monday. Porter has one year left on his contract that will pay him $40.8 million for the 2026-27 campaign, meaning that he is eligible to sign an extension he’s apparently looking for.

“Yeah, I know that’s probably on my agent’s mind. He spoke to me about it a little bit. It probably hasn’t been on my mind enough until now, end of the offseason, but if it was up to me, I would love to sign an extension with this franchise,” Porter said during his exit interview on Monday. I feel like the guys mesh. We have great vibes, great energy in the locker room, and to be a part of something that is building in a positive way, a positive momentum, that would be awesome.”

Porter, 27, is coming off his best season in the NBA as he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line. Porter not only led the Nets in points per game by 8.6 points, but he also led the team in rebounds per game with starter Nic Claxton slightly behind him with his 6.9 rebounds per contest average.

While Porter isn’t one of Brooklyn’s nine free-agents, his contract extension will likely be one of the biggest storylines for a franchise that is hoping to be more competitive next season. The Nets still have to see what happens in the 2026 NBA Draft and how their rookies look in their second year in the league, but Porter and Marks seem like the goal is to continue this partnership beyond next year.
