Some Trader Joe’s shoppers may be eligible for about $100 each after the grocery chain agreed to a $7.4 million class action settlement.
The lawsuit, filed in 2019, alleged that some Trader Joe’s receipts printed the first six and last four digits of customers’ credit or debit card numbers, a practice the plaintiffs said violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA). The law prohibits businesses from printing more than the last five digits of a card number on receipts to reduce the risk of identity theft.
Trader Joe’s denied wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid further litigation. Customers who believe they qualify have until June 9 to file a claim.
Who is eligible?
The settlement covers customers who, between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, made a purchase at a Trader Joe’s store using a credit or debit card and received a receipt showing more than the last five digits of their card number.
Only transactions at select stores during that period are included. Customers unsure about eligibility can check the settlement website, call 1-888-444-7415, or write to the settlement administrator at Keim v. Trader Joe’s Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 301134, Los Angeles, CA 90030-1134.
How to file a claim
Eligible customers can submit a claim online through the settlement website or mail a completed form using their Class ID number. The deadline is June 9. A court must still grant final approval before payments are issued. A hearing is scheduled for August.
How much could you get?
Payments will vary depending on the number of valid claims and fees deducted from the fund. The settlement estimates individual payouts at about $102. Checks would be mailed within about 10 business days after final approval and would be valid for 180 days.
