Nahshon Wright is the wild card of the Jets' cornerback position

The New York Jets made some changes at cornerback this offseason.

Brandon Stephens, Azareye’h Thomas, and Jarvis Brownlee are back. They are joined in a revamped room by rookie draft-pick D’Angelo Ponds and free-agent signing Nahshon Wright.

Brownlee and Ponds are competing for reps at nickel. Stephens is the veteran starter on the boundary. The Jets are hoping for Thomas to take a big developmental step in his sophomore season, but Wright is a real wild-card that could change everything at the position for Aaron Glenn.

The Jets signed Wright to a one-year contract worth $3.5 million. That’s low-key money for a veteran cornerback who has been productive in this league. It’s especially notable that Wright recorded five interceptions last year, and he’s joining a Jets defense that historically had zero interceptions last season.

Cornerback is arguably among the Jets’ most improved positions this offseason.

It feels like nobody should be guaranteed anything. There’s even a scenario where Stephens ends up behind Thomas and Wright, if the latter two particularly impress at OTAs and training camp.

Wright is the cornerback who could flip the depth chart upside down. His playmaking ability is precisely why Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn identified him as a smart free-agent fit.

Don’t be shocked if Wright ends up playing a major role in the Jets’ secondary this season.
