Mount Vernon man charged in fatal shooting of his niece in the Bronx

A Mount Vernon man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of his niece half a mile from their home in the Bronx.

Michael Foster, 58, was charged with second-degree murder, accused of gunning down Julia Anderson late Tuesday, July 14, as she got into her Jeep at the corner of Murdock and Nereid avenues near the group home where she worked.

Anderson was going to turn 40 next month.

Sources told New York City media outlets the shooting stemmed from a dispute over home ownership.

The defendant and victim lived at 18 Bell Ave. in Mount Vernon, at the end of a dead end street near the Bronx border.

The home is still listed on the Mount Vernon assessment roll as owned by Aston and Icilda Foster, who bought it in 1978. They were Michael Foster’s parents and Anderson’s maternal grandparents. Aston Foster died at the age of 76 in 2005 and Icilda three years ago when she was 82.

Westchester land records show that in 2017, Icilda deeded the home to Michael Foster, Anderson and Beverley Foster, Anderson’s mother. Another deed filed last year listed all three as the owners with language that the new deed “reflects an internal agreement among the listed parties to formalize and reaffirm legal ownership while removing previous record holders.”
