Mohegan Beach Park District, in Yorktown’s Mohegan Lake, can reopen after a July 28 water sample showed that a harmful algae bloom subsided, the Westchester County Department of Health said.
A news release Wednesday, July 30, said the health department determined the beach can open if there’s no bloom in the swimming area for at least a day.
The beaches’ bathing area will continue to be monitored.
The beach at Mohegan Colony Association on Mohegan Lake reopened July 22.
They are the only county-regulated Mohegan Lake beaches.
“These beach closures are a precaution to ensure the safety and health of the public,” Dr. Sherlita Amler, county health commissioner, said. “Harmful Algae Blooms are more prevalent during hot days when water temperatures rise, leading to increased bacteriological growth rates.”
