Defense may have evolved over the years, but one principle has never changed: the front and the secondary depend on one another. That’s a belief new safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has carried throughout his career, and it’s one he shared after his first New York Jets training camp practice.
“I’m a DB, and I’m not ashamed to say that it starts with the guys up front,” Fitzpatrick told reporters.
It’s a simple message, but an important one. The Jets spent the offseason looking to create a more disruptive defense after struggling to consistently affect opposing quarterbacks and generate takeaways in 2025. The goal is straightforward. Improve the pass rush. Tighten coverage on the back end and allow each level of the defense to make the other better.
Head coach Aaron Glenn has already begun putting that plan into motion.
Speaking with reporters after practice, Glenn said there were “a number of things this offseason” he wanted to improve upon and expressed excitement about implementing those changes during his second season leading the Jets.

Championship defenses are rarely built by one position group alone. If the Jets’ defensive line creates consistent pressure and the secondary capitalizes on hurried throws, Fitzpatrick’s philosophy could become the blueprint for the turnaround New York has been chasing.
