Geno Smith inherits one of the NFL’s most talented supporting casts as he begins his second stint with the New York Jets. Near the top of that list is wide receiver Garrett Wilson, a player Smith has admired long before the two became teammates.
“I think the world of Garrett,” Smith told reporters following the first training camp practice. “I’ve followed his career since he was at Ohio State. He’s a great receiver and a tremendous person. His work ethic… his talent speaks for itself. He’s just a great teammate as well.”
It’s high praise from a veteran quarterback who has played alongside some of the league’s top pass catchers during his career. See below for Smith’s full quote:
The admiration appears to be mutual. Wilson recently spoke about the veteran leaders the Jets added this offseason, saying players like Smith returned to New York because they believe in what the organization is building.
“They wanted to come back and prove something,” Wilson said. “They already proved enough, but they wanted to come back and prove it here. That’s special to me.”

The Jets have spent the offseason surrounding Smith with playmakers, but building chemistry remains one of training camp’s biggest objectives. Based on the early respect both players have shown for one another, the quarterback-receiver connection appears to be off to a promising start as New York prepares for the 2026 season.
