Middletown man who pleaded guilty to raping child sentenced 9 years

A Middletown man who previously pleaded guilty to raping a child under the age of 13 was sentenced Oct. 6 to nine years in state prison and 10 years of post-release supervision.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler announced the sentence for Eusten Coppin, 27, of Middletown.

Hoovler said that at the sentencing, the people had recommended Coppin be sentenced to 12 years in state prison, followed by 10 years of post-release supervision.

Coppin pleaded guilty to first-degree rape, a felony.

As a condition of his sentence, Coppin must be registered as a sex offender.

At his plea proceeding, Coppin admitted that on June 30, 2016, at which time he was 18 years of age or older, he engaged in sexual intercourse with a person who was less than 13 years old.

“Those who victimize children deserve the harshest punishment,” Hoovler said in a statement released by his office. “The lengthy prison sentence imposed in this case signifies the seriousness of the defendant’s admitted conduct. While cases such as this one are challenging for the victims and for the law enforcement officers tasked with investigating the crimes, we nonetheless remain committed to pursue accountability for these dangerous offenders.”

The name of Coppin’s attorney was not immediately available.
