Papito’s Burritos has closed at 1356 Culver Road in Rochester after just under a year in business.
The mother-and-son team of Toni Lese and Dean Desain teamed up to open the California-inspired Mexican restaurant last summer. They moved the restaurant from Lyons, where they had operated for two years. The space was the former home to James Brown’s Place, which they transformed into a brightly colored full-service restaurant with a kitchen in back.
In April, the restaurant made it to the Elite 8 of the D&C’s Best Tacos Poll.
“As much as we love our brand, the building’s bills are too high,” Desain said. Among them: its most recent energy bill from RG&E and New Wave Energy totaling more than $12,000 – an $8,000 balance plus $4,700 in monthly charges.
Lese plans to launch a small Italian bistro in their previous location at One Canal Street in Lyons. An opening date has not been set but she hopes to open within the next couple of months.
