If you think there are fewer Subways around, you’d be right.
The Subway chain closed 631 restaurants in 2024, according to franchise disclosure documents analyzed by USA TODAY.
The numbers have been dropping for a few years. At the beginning of 2022, there were 21,147 Subway franchises across the United States. By the end of 2024, there were 19,502, a drop of 1,645 restaurants.

Florida ranks just behind California when it comes to the number of Subway restaurants that have closed between the beginning 2022 and the end of 2024. Here are the top 10:

Subway wants restaurants in ‘right location’
A Subway spokesperson told the USA TODAY the company is optimizing its footprint “using a strategic, data-driven approach to ensure restaurants are in the right location, image and format and operated by the right franchisees.”
Is Subway going out of business?
No. In fact, the sandwich chain announced in October 2024 it had signed more than 20 master franchise agreements for more than 10,000 future restaurant commitments
“This includes opening new restaurants as well as relocating or closing locations as needed, to ensure a consistent, high-quality and convenient guest experience.”
While the number of Subway restaurants in the U.S. may be going down, Subway said it has achieved “positive global net restaurant growth” for the second consecutive year and currently has nearly 37,000 locations worldwide.
