One homeless man is accused of stabbing another to death with a screwdriver outside a Rochester gas station Monday morning, according to Rochester police.
The homicide occurred outside the gas station at 540 Portland Ave. around 5:45 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, said Capt. Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department.

Antonio McKnight, 32, was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of Laverne Singletary, 59, Umbrino said. McKnight is accused of stabbing Singletary at least once in the chest with a screwdriver during a verbal argument that became physical, he said. Singletary was rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Umbrino said the two men knew one another before Monday’s fatal encounter, which marked Rochester’s 26th homicide of 2025, according to RPD’s Open Data Portal.
Responding officers located McKnight near the gas station (near Portland and Clifford avenues) on Monday morning and apprehended him without incident.
McKnight will be arraigned on the felony charge at a later date, Umbrino said.
