Rye Country Day wins 14th NYSAIS title

Rye Country Day’s defense was one of its strengths throughout the 2025 season and Monday’s New York State Association of Independent Schools final was no different.
Wildcat keeper Dylan Fenyes saw no shots and her teammates put in three as Rye Country Day topped rival Hackley 3-0 at Manhattanville University.
Kate Keating had a goal and an assist and Clare Keating and Meera Spencer also scored in the win.
The championship was the Wildcats’ 14th in NYSAIS field hockey.
Rye Country Day, which routed Fieldston 9-0 in the semifinals, finished its season 12-3-1.
Maddie Edwards was solid in net for Hackley, turning aside 11 shots.
The Hornets, who reached the championship game via a dramatic 1-0 shootout win over Riverdale, ended their season as Ivy League champions and with an 11-5-1 record.
Section 1 championships
Class C: No. 1 Bronxville 3, No. 2 Rye Neck 0
SHRUB OAK — The drought — if one can consider two seasons without a section championship a drought — is over for the Bronxville field hockey team.
The top-seeded Broncos blanked No. 2 Rye Neck 3-0 at Lakeland High Saturday, Nov. 1 to win the Section 1 Class C championship.
Rye Neck put up a much better fight than in the teams’ previous meeting this season, which ended with Bronxville winning 7-2.
But Bronxville, led by Emma Yeon’s two goals and an assist, always appeared in control.
What it means
With the loss, Rye Neck finished its season 14-4.
Bronxville, now 15-3, will play in the state regional semifinals against the Section 9 winner Wednesday at Rondout Valley High School.
Players of the game
Two Broncos seniors, Emma Yeon, whose assist was to her sister, Isabel, and Sabrina Presant, who was a force controlling the backfield, shutting down much of the Panthers’ offense and triggering offensive rushes with strong passes, shared top player honors.
Emma Yeon’s second goal, which put Bronxville up 3-0, was particularly impressive as she spun away from a Panthers defender and then immediately fired on the cage.
Game stats
Eleanor Fahy assisted on Emma Yeon’s first score, which was early in the second quarter and broke a 0-0 tie.
Rye Neck goalie Charlotte McCallion kept her team in the game. She finished with 14 saves, her best coming halfway through the fourth quarter, when, with the Broncos picking up their game, she stopped a tough redirection.
Bronco keeper Eva Klessel had one save.
The Broncos had 18 penalty corners to the Panthers’ two.
They said it
“I really think it’s the energy of our team,” Emma Yeon said when asked about the key to the win. “From the start of preseason, we have a really senior-heavy team this year and, as well, we’ve been playing for so long together that we’re not just a team, we’re a family, and that really came out today.
“I think we’re also excited for every person on the field and on our sideline that like we were able to stay energized and stay connecting with each other,” Presant said.
“I think (winning the title is) really a dream come true not just for me and Sabrina, but for every senior on the team and it’s really something we’ve been working for our entire high school careers as field hockey players,” Yeon said.

Class B: Horace Greeley edges Rye 1-0
SHRUB OAK — Eve Rutman is known for two things: Her ability to stop almost any opponent’s best player and her ability, at the other end of the field, to absolutely rip rocket shots off penalty corners.
She did a lot of stopping Saturday at Lakeland High during No. 3-seed Horace Greeley’s Section 1 Class B championship game against No. 1 Rye.
And she did a lot of shooting rockets.
But it was her shot, deflected by a Rye defender, which became, as Rye coach Val Perkins noted, a rainbow, that arched over Rye’s leaping goalie, Chloe Holden, to find the back of the cage.
That goal, which came with just eight seconds left in the first half, was all Greeley needed to pull out a tense 1-0 win for the championship.
What it means
With the win, Greeley, which defeated 16-consecutive-time section champ Lakeland in the semifinals, will advance to the state regional finals, since Section 1 has a bye in Class B for semis this year.
The Quakers, now 15-1-1, will face the winner of the Section 2-vs-3 game with the location to be determined.
Rye, which had fallen 3-0 during the regular season to Greeley but which had the higher seed due to playing a tougher schedule, finished its season 16-3.
Player of the game
Forgetting her winning goal, Rutman stood out in a game in which there were multiple standouts, including Holden, who had some incredible saves among her 20 stops.
Rutman, the hands-down player of the game, had numerous takeaways. With about 4:15 left in the third quareter, she stopped a huge, third-quarter rush by Rye around her own 20, potentially saving a big chance for the Garnets to tie the score. She also stopped a Rye penalty corner, then got the ball out of the circle, despite having two Rye players on her
Game stats
Holden had 20 saves, very few of them easy. Her best of many good ones was probably her left-to-right stop on a high-percentage Nicole Weyne shot.
Robertson had only two saves but one was a potential game-saver in which she found herself alone and stepped into the open shooter.
Rye had a big 14-2 penalty corner advantage.
They said it
“I think we’re a fast team. I think we just needed to find some more space for more opportunities,” said Perkins, who described herself as extremely proud of her team’s effort.
“Our defense was incredible, especially Chloe. Chloe was standing on her head at times making saves,” she said, adding, “It was a fight to the end.”
Rutman, who’ll play field hockey for Wesleyan next year, said the play off which she scored was desgined. She described the deflection up and over Holden as “super lucky,” but noted it was also super energizing for her team.
“… After that goal, I think we were pumped up so much, like that really carried the whole game and I think that one goal really set us above and beyond to be motivated to win,” Rutman said.
With Rye one shot away from tying things, Rutman described the game’s last five minutes as “probably the longest five minutes of my life.”
Of the win, she said, “I’ve been waiting for this game, this day forever.”
Final: 1-0
Fourth quarter: Sliding save by Holden and then Darby Robertson, who has to have been cold, came up with a huge, huge stop to keep Greeley on top. Eve Rutman playing what has to be one of the best games of her fine career. She stops a Rye penalty corner and gets the ball out despite having two Garnet players on her. 2:13 to play.
Greeley 1, Rye 0 end of 3 quarters
Third quarter: Just an amazing save by Chloe Holden on a fast, hard shot by Nicole Weyne with fewer than three minutes gone in the quarter. Then Holden goes down to the turf to use her stick to poke away a Greeley pass in front of the net.
Super right leg save by Holden on rocket by Eve Rutman off a penalty corner about halfway through the quarter. Rutman responds with great defensive stop on a Rye rush inside the Greeley 20.
Halftime: Greeley 1, Rye 0
Second quarter: Greeley finally breaks through with eight seconds left in the corner. Her shot off a corner goes up and out of the reach of Garnet goalie Chloe Holden, who has been very, very good.
First quarter: Despite their seedings, Greeley only lost in Section 1 to Class A winner Mamaroneck and it beat Rye 3-0.
Greeley looks stong early on. A goal, scored with 9:30 left, was waved off for an apparent foot violation. Quaker Eve Rutman has multiple pickoffs Chloe Holden has been strong for Rye in net. She also got help from Thea Fairhurst, who saved a high shot off a rebound with her stick.
End of first quarter: 0-0
Mamaroneck, winner of two straight championships, beats Clarkstown 4-0 in Section 1 Class A final
SHRUB OAK – There are times when a score to a game reflects exactly what happened.
Not Saturday. Not for the Section 1 Class A championship game between No. 1-seed Mamaroneck and No. 3 Clarkstown.
Mamaroneck, the winner of two straight Class A state championships, won 4-0.
But the score could have been much more lopsided without the outstanding play of Clarkstown keeper Lily Brower.
Her 24 saves included a couple that would require instant replay to fully comprehend.
But it was impossible for Clarkstown to overcome Mamaroneck’s depth at every position and its speed.
The Tigers enjoyed a huge 22-2 penalty corner advantage and Tiger goalie Penny Norgaard only had to make two saves to notch the shutout.
What it means
Mamaroneck, now 17-2, will play the Section 9 champion at Rondout Valley High School Wednesday in a state regional semifinal.
Clarkstown, which got to the final via a thrilling 4-3 double-overtime semifinal win over No. 2-seed White Plains fewer than 24 hours earlier, finished its season 16-3.
Players of the game
Top player honors went to senior Emma Kirwin, who scored twice and shut down multiple Clarkstown rushes with takeaways, and to sophomore Meredith D’Arcy, who also had multiple defensive stops and strong offense-generating passes.
Game stats
Teagan Hanrahan and Lily Brickman also scored for the Tigers.
Lucy Kaplan had two assists, hitting Kirwin and Brickman in front with perfect passes for one-timers.
Lila Avery and Ava Lawlor each had one assist.
They said it
“I think our team has a lot of heart . We never take any team for granted,” Kirwin said. “We all just go in thinking this game could be our last but try to make it not our last.”
