ZPS voters approve $186M bond for district-wide improvements

A series of improvements are coming to Zeeland Public Schools, following approval of a $186 million bond proposal from voters Nov. 4.

Residents narrowly supported the measure, which doesn’t result in a tax rate increase, by a margin of 3 percentage points. The proposal received 3,537 votes in support (51.6%) and 3,132 votes against (48.4%), according to unofficial results from Ottawa County and Allegan County.

“The approval of this bond is a powerful reminder of what Zeeland values most,” ZPS Superintendent Rod Hetherton wrote in a statement provided to The Sentinel. “We’re a place where people come together, invest in relationships and always look out for the next generation.

“We’re so thankful to walk alongside a community that shows up for its students. It reflects a shared belief in our schools, our staff and the potential of every student. We move forward with thankful hearts and a strong commitment to serving our families well.”

The district is planning updates and renovations in some form at every building in the district, including:

Projects will be completed in phases from 2027 to 2035. The first projects are scheduled at Creekside Middle School, followed by work at Roosevelt Elementary and Lincoln Elementary. An estimated timeline is available at zps.org/bond-2025.

The proposal doesn’t increase the district’s current millage rate of 7.45, since other mills will expire in 2027. One mill is equal to $1 per $1,000 of taxable value on a property.
