Maine-Endwell ends Horseheads' run at STAC boys wrestling tourney

Maine-Endwell capped a big week for its program by capturing the school’s first Southern Tier Athletic Conference Boys Wrestling Championships title since 1985 on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Binghamton High School.

The Spartans finished with 195 points to top runner-up Horseheads, which scored 181.5 in a bid for its fifth consecutive STAC tournament title and seventh since 2017.

Waverly placed third with 178.5 points.

Earlier in the week, Maine-Endwell claimed the title at the Section 4 Division I Dual Meet Tournament with a victory against Elmira in the championship round.

M-E will compete in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Dual Meet Championships on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena and Events Center in Syracuse.

The Spartans’ triumph Saturday was buoyed by 10 top-six finishes. That included the 190-pound title from Griffin McQuade.

Seven repeat individual champions

Norwich two-time state champion Maverick Beckwith, a junior, secured his fourth conference title with a victory at 150 pounds.

McQuade was one of six other wrestlers who claimed back-to-back championships. Joining him were Oneonta’s Clayton Ritter (118 pounds), Waverly’s Rhylee Stotler (126), Johnson City’s William Ackley (157), Ithaca’s Quentin Getzin (175) and Waverly’s Troy Beeman (285).

Waverly topped the field with four champions, the others being Daltton Davis at 138 and Matthias Welles at 215.

Horseheads had three titlists: Josh Knapp (110), Gavin Hornsby (132) and Zach Shrage (165).

The other weight-class winners were Owego Free Academy’s Gavin Lovell (103) and Elmira’s Lavonte Gibbons (144).
