Last year, Stever’s Candies, a Rochester institution since 1946, moved its production operation to 620 South Ave. in the South Wedge.
And at 10 a.m. Nov. 21, it opened a small store in the building.
When we visited, ladders were propped in front of the door, signage had yet to be installed and some shelves were in the process of being stocked, but customers are welcome.
Stever’s co-owner John Vangellow said an official grand opening is planned for January.
The South Wedge retail space is much smaller than the flagship store, but it’s got something the Park Avenue location doesn’t: designated parking. There’s a lot right in front, because the building is set back from the street.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
On Facebook, Vangellow assured commenters that nothing is changing at the Park Avenue store.
Stever’s actually got its start in the South Wedge, when Douglas and Hilda Stever opened their first shop on South Goodman Street. They bought the Park Avenue property in 1960.
Eventually, Douglas and Hilda’s son, Kevin Stever, and his wife, Leslie took over the business.
In November 2022, they sold it and the Tudor-style building to John Vangellow and his father, Eric Vangellow, who embarked on a major remodel.
Stever’s South Wedge store isn’t far from two other businesses that sell sweet treats: Hedonist Artisan Chocolates, 674 South Ave., and Cheesy Eddies, 602 South Ave.
