The peak gust of the storm that dropped nearly two feet of snow on parts of Long Island reached 84 mph early Monday morning as it pushed through the New York City area.
The 84 mph gust was recorded at 3:30 a.m. at Montauk Point in Suffolk County, according to the National Weather Service in New York. The gusts are part of a powerful nor’easter that has brought heavy, steady snow, powerful winds, and dangerous blizzard conditions.

The two strongest gusts recorded on Long Island Monday are also considered hurricane strength and, according to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane wind scale, would be the same strength as a category 1 hurricane, which is between 74 and 95 mph, according to the Weather Service.
