One day after inducting its 2025 class, the Baseball Hall of Fame lost another of members Monday with the death of 2005 inductee Ryne Sandberg.

“Ryne Sandberg had a relentless work ethic and an unshakable positive outlook. With it, he inspired all those who knew him,” Hall of Fame chairman Jane Forbes Clark, who had quoted Sandberg in her remarks at Sunday’s ceremony, said in a statement released by the museum. “He always emphasized his respect for the way the game should be played, for his teammates and for the Hall of Fame, especially during his 2005 Induction speech. We send our deepest sympathies to his wife, Margaret, and his family, as we remember and celebrate his life.”

Sandberg, born in Spokane, Washington, died at his home in Lake Bluff, Illinois, at the age of 65. He had been battling cancer.

COOPERSTOWN ― In traditional baseball fashion, a rain delay has changed the start time for this afternoon’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Rain showers passed through the area overnight, and there are light sprinkles in the air under overcast skies this morning with an almost 40% chance of rain until 3 p.m. when the skies are expected to clear.

The ceremony, originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m., will now start at 2:30 p.m. with live television coverage on MLB Network.

This is not the first induction ceremony to be changed because of the weather. The 1990 induction of Jim Palmer and Joe Morgan was postponed one day and moved indoors from Cooper Park, the ceremony’s former site staged from the steps of the Hall of Fame library, and the ceremony moved to the Clark Sports Center grounds two years later. The most recent weather delay was in 2010.

Other ceremonies have been delayed, the 2000 ceremony was canceled, and the 2021 ceremony was held in September.

COOPERSTOWN — Another induction weekend is upon us and the crowd is gathering in Cooperstown for the 2025 Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony, set for Sunday, July 27.

Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, Billy Wagner and posthumous inductees Dave Parker and Dick Allen will join the hall at a ceremony Sunday afternoon at the Clark Sports Center, and their plaques will be hung in the Hall’s gallery later in the day.

Hall of Fame activities run through the weekend, and the Otsego County village is a draw for sports memorabilia collectors pursuing autographs and other items from baseball’s past and present with 52 past inductees among those expected in town for the weekend festivities.

Saturday’s highlights include the evening Parade of Legends, presentation of the Ford Frick and Baseball Writers Association of America awards, and Hall of Famers’ golf outing on the Leatherstocking course.
