Kent Primary School learns American history at Living History Day

Students at Kent Primary School recently took part in a fourth-grade tradition of learning about American history through a Living History program taught by three Carmel educators.

Rob Buccheri, Keith Reilly and Denise Santalis all teach in the Carmel School District and are master teachers for the Living History Education Foundation. Every year, they get together to teach kids about colonial times in a unique way at each of Carmel’s three elementary schools.

“One way to learn history is living it,” explained Santalis, who is a reading teacher at George Fisher Middle School. “Thirty years from now, they’re going to remember this awesome experience.”

Under the direction of the teachers, the students − wearing colonial uniforms − pitched a tent on the front lawn of the school on Route 52 and later posed for a photo in the tent.

Students explore historical sites in Westchester County for the nation’s 250th.

A school year is 180 days, with no two days and no two schools exactly alike. The students differ, the teachers differ, school cultures differ. Here, our photographers find what makes our school days anything but ordinary, the people and programs and events that make a difference, school day in and school day out.
