A survey worker was critically injured Friday after being struck by a pickup truck in an active work zone in Chenango County, according to New York State Police.
The crash happened at about 2:52 p.m. Aug. 14 on State Route 206 in the town of Greene.
Survey worker critically injured
A preliminary investigation determined that a 2023 Ford Ranger was traveling westbound on Route 206 through a posted work zone when the driver failed to maintain his lane, police said.
The truck struck a survey worker who was conducting testing outside his vehicle on a closed portion of the roadway.
Police identified the worker as Jeffrey Michael Hall, 34, of Monticello. The impact knocked Hall into the open door of his vehicle.
Hall suffered serious injuries and was flown to SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he was listed in critical condition.
Driver issued traffic citations
Police identified the driver as Kenneth J. Alberts, 59, of McGraw.
Alberts called 911 immediately after the crash and has cooperated with investigators, police said. He was issued traffic citations.
The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene to assist with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Police urge caution in work zones
State Police are reminding motorists to use extra caution when driving through active work zones.
Drivers should slow down, follow posted speed limits and remain alert for workers and equipment. Motorists should also be prepared for lane changes, sudden stops and other changes in traffic patterns.
Drivers should move over when it can be done safely to help protect workers performing roadway improvements.
