New York Giants actively engaging other teams as cutdown day looms

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen is working the phones and studying film as the final roster cutdown approaches.

During the NBC broadcast of Saturday’s preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, Schoen outlined the front office’s ongoing efforts to upgrade the roster before the 53-man deadline.

“I’m making calls to different general managers around the league on where they may have a surplus, and we may have a need, or we have a surplus, and they have a need,” Schoen said.

Schoen and his staff are evaluating film on players who could fill positional needs while staying in contact with other teams about possible trades. The Giants also hold the fifth spot in the waiver claim order once teams reduce their rosters, placing them in a strong position to add talent that becomes available.

This time of year often produces opportunities for clubs willing to be aggressive. Schoen indicated the organization is exploring every avenue to improve the roster ahead of the regular season, whether through trades, claims or identifying overlooked players who fit the team’s scheme under head coach John Harbaugh.

With cutdown day looming, the Giants’ front office remains active in its search for upgrades that can help the club as it continues shaping the 2026 roster.
