Jets snubbed from top-10 linebacker ranking but earn honorable mention

The New York Jets have spent the past two offseasons reshaping nearly every level of their defense. Aaron Glenn inherited a roster with pieces already in place, but the front office continued emphasizing leadership, experience, and physicality as it searched for the right blend of veterans and young talent.

One of the biggest additions came at linebacker. Demario Davis arrived for a second stint with more than a decade of NFL experience, countless accolades, and a reputation as one of the game’s smartest defensive players. Even at 37 years old, he’s expected to anchor the middle of New York’s defense while helping accelerate the development of younger teammates such as Jamien Sherwood. That reputation extends well beyond Florham Park.

A recent ESPN survey of NFL executives, coaches, and scouts left the Jets without a linebacker in its top 10 rankings, but Davis still received honorable mention. One NFC executive offered perhaps the simplest evaluation of the veteran linebacker, describing him as “fine wine.”

It’s hard to find a more fitting description. Davis has continued defying expectations at an age when many linebackers have already retired (or may need to). His instincts, preparation, and leadership remain among the best in football. They allow him to overcome the natural effects of time while continuing to play at a high level.

The honorable mention also shines a light on a linebacker room that may deserve more attention than it’s receiving. Sherwood has continued developing into an important piece of the defense, and Davis’ arrival gives the Jets another accomplished veteran capable of setting the standard both on and off the field.

The rankings will generate plenty of debate, as they always do. The Jets, however, would gladly settle for something more meaningful. If Davis continues playing the way his peers believe he can, New York’s linebackers won’t stay out of the spotlight for very long.
