New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston praised the relationship between Jaxson Dart and Abdul Carter as a powerful example of unity amid political differences.
The situation arose after Dart introduced President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Suffern, New York, on May 22, prompting Carter — who has publicly stated his opposition to Trump — to question the decision on social media.
Despite the initial discomfort, Winston highlighted how the two draft classmates, who sit next to each other in meetings, navigated the controversy with maturity.
“We don’t have to agree. We don’t have to respect or even understand people’s perspective,” Winston told reporters on Friday, “but we should support their perspective because that’s what they believe in.”
Drawing from his Birmingham, Alabama roots and civil rights history — including the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing — Winston urged the team to turn uncomfortable situations into growth. He rejected cancel culture, emphasized grace and love over hate, and celebrated the symbolism between Dart and Carter.
“We’ve got a blond-haired, blue-eyed white kid and a Black Muslim religion, Black kid, who are coming together and showing y’all, showing the world that we can come together,” Winston said. “We don’t have to see everything — everything doesn’t have to be viewed in this perfect little snow globe and everything doesn’t have to be perfect.
“But we have to support each other. We have to promote love because love is a stronger feeling than hate, and eliminate these unwanted opinions. Everybody has something to say. But how many people are willing to act on change?”
Winston stressed that while the players hold differing political views, their mutual support and focus on football exemplify what sports can teach society. He believes this experience strengthens the young Giants roster and serves as a broader message for America.
