Iona Prep wrestlers picked up a pair of CHSAA New York State wrestling championships on Feb. 15 at St. Mary’s High School in Lancaster. Both wrestlers also earned ntry to the New York State Div. I tournament hosted by NYSPHSAA Feb. 27-28 at MVP Arena in Albany.
Iona Prep senior George Johnson won the 157-pound CHSAA NYS title, pinning Joseph Colantino of St. Francis for the title in 1:46. Earlier this season, Johnson won his first Eastern States title at 157 and won the Westchester County title at 165. In 2025, Johnson placed sixth at 145 pounds at the NYSPHSAA state tournament. Earlier this month, Horace Greeley’s Chris Nocca won the Section 1 Div. I title for large schools at 157 with a 16-1 technical fall win over Mahopac’s Pace Zeiler, who also qualified for the state tournament.

Iona Prep sophomore Shane Degl won the 138-pound CHSAA NYS title, winning an 11-1 major decision over Kole Haseley of St. Francis. Earlier this season, Degl won championships at the Shoreline Classic in New Rochelle and the Westchester County Championships in Sleepy Hollow. Earlier this month, Mahopac’s Charles Przymylski won the Section 1 Div. I title for large schools at 138 with a 10-5 decision over Somers’ Ryan Ball, who also qualified for the state tournament.
Iona Prep placed fourth in the team scoring with 175.5 points and Stepinac placed 10th in team scoring with 62 points. St. Francis won the team championship with 423 points. Iona Prep had five other wrestlers place: Malcolm Davis (second, 150 pounds), Dorian Hidalgo (third, 118 pounds), Fotis Koufalis (third, 126 pounds). Joseph Rivera (fifth, 132 pounds) and Ralphie Rodriguez (third, 175 pounds).
Stepinac had three wrestlers place at the event – Jet Martin (third, 110 pounds), Jack Mitchell (fifth, 157 pounds) and Samuel Richardson (fourth, 285 pounds).
Here is the updated list of entries to the New York State tournament, hosted by NYSPHSAA Feb. 26-28 at MVP Arena in Albany. The girls freestyle tournament takes place Feb. 26. The boys Div. I and Div. II tournaments are Feb. 27-28.
