Early on the morning of June 28, 1983, a section of the Mianus River Bridge on Interstate 95 in Cos Cob, Conn., collapsed, sending two tractor-trailers and two passenger cars into the river.
Three people died and three others were injured.
According to a report by the National Transportation Safety Board a 100-foot span of the bridge suddenly collapsed sending the vehicles tumbling 70 feet into the river below.
The NTSB concluded the collapse was due to, “corrosion-induced forces due to deficiencies in the State of Connecticut’s bridge safety inspection and bridge maintenance program.”
