Hot, humid week set for Mohawk Valley, 50% chance of rain on July 4

The Fourth of July weekend maybe a little soggy, but it could bring some relief from high heat and humidity expected this week in the Mohawk Valley, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Binghamton Field Office.

Leading up to the holiday weekend, look for possible rain, isolated to scattered thunderstorms to roll in the afternoon of June 30, following a rise in humidity and temps as high as 90 degrees, with a heat index of 9 degrees.

July starts off super warm, with highs on July 1 and 2 near 96 degrees, with a heat index of over 100 on both days.

A pop-up thunderstorm may occur on July 1.

Highs are forecast in the high 90s through at least Friday, according to NWS.

At least some of the heat and humidity may dwell on July 4, where the 50% chance of rain might cool things off while threatening to extinguish festivities and fireworks displays.

Heat Related Illnesses

High heat can take a toll on the body and possibly lead to heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Heat Exhaustion

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include: dizziness, extreme thirst, heavy sweating, nausea, and weakness. Ignoring these symptoms could lead to heat stroke, according to NWS.

If experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion, do the following:

If after doing the above in response to symptoms, they persist, seek medical attention.

Heat Stroke

Symptoms of heat stroke include: confusion, dizziness, and possible fainting/unconsciousness, according to NWS.

If experiencing symptoms of heat stroke, call 911 for immediate evaluation, intervention. If left untreated Heat Stroke could lead to permanent disability or even death.

High Heat: Impact on vulnerable populations

The following cohorts are particularly vulnerable to heat; check in with family and friends who fall within one or more of these populations when humidity and heat rise, especially if they do not have air conditioning.

Fourth of July forecast

July 4th weekend weather forecast for Greater Utica, Mohawk Valley region is high heat, high humidity, and a coin-toss-chance of rain on July 4, according to NWS.

On July 4, the NWS is calling for highs near 90 degrees, with a 50 percent chance of rain.

July 5 is expected to be slightly cooler, with temperatures in the high 80s, with a 30 percent chance of rain.
