As the NFL coaching carousel spins wildly this week, one thing remains certain. The New York Giants and John Harbaugh have a date with destiny and neither wants to miss it.
Harbaugh has been said to covet the Giants’ vacant head coaching position, and even though there’s been a lot of subterfuge and other McGuffins in cyberspace and on the airwaves, linking Harbaugh to other teams, his meeting next week with the Giants is going to determine who signs where this year.
According to NFL insider Dianna Russini, the Giants are reportedly hovering over Harbaugh in an effort to ensure they get to make their pitch before another organization can swoop in and whisk him away.
The one team that has posed the biggest threat to the Giants’ quest to land Harbaugh is the Miami Dolphins and owner Stephen Ross, who could outbid the Giants for Harbaugh’s services. That might have been contingent on Harbaugh agreeing to have input on the hiring of the new general manager.
On Friday, the Dolphins did hire a new GM, but it’s someone who has no history with Harbaugh, which sends a mixed message to those trying to figure out what’s going on here.
The Dolphins have been falling all over themselves trying to find the right combination for the better part of two decades. Very few things they do make much sense to outsiders. Giant fans shouldn’t be licking their chops yet, though. There’s a long way to go in this process yet.
