An extreme heat watch has been issued for the New York City metropolitan area from Wednesday through Friday as dangerous heat and humidity are expected to grip the region ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.
The National Weather Service said the watch is in effect from noon Wednesday, July 1, through 9 p.m. Friday, July 3, for New York City, the Lower Hudson Valley, Long Island, northern New Jersey and western Connecticut.
Daytime high temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s to near 100 degrees, with heat index values — or “feels like” temperatures — forecast between 105 and 110 degrees.
What is an extreme heat watch?
The National Weather Service issues an extreme heat watch when conditions are favorable for dangerously hot weather that could pose a significant health risk.
Forecasters expect heat index values to range from 105 to 110 degrees during the watch period. Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated and check on older adults and other vulnerable individuals.

Wednesday, July 1: Mostly sunny with a high near 95. A slight chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Low around 79.
Thursday, July 2: Sunny and very hot with a high near 100. Heat index values between 105 and 110. Mostly clear overnight with a low around 82.
Friday, July 3: Sunny with a high near 99. Heat index values between 100 and 105. Chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday evening. Low around 80.
Saturday, July 4: Mostly sunny with a high near 94. Showers and thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon and evening.
Sunday, July 5: Mostly sunny with a high near 91. A chance of showers and thunderstorms remains in the forecast.
