A former cashier at the White Plains Metro North train station has avoided jail time after paying back more than $200,000 that he stole, the Westchester District Attorney’s Office announced.
Westchester Judge Erin McGoey sentenced Tom Shabani, 61, of Millwood, to three years probation on Monday, March 9. Shabani also agreed to forfeit 25 percent of his pension when he pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny in November.
“The people of Westchester County are entitled to expect that honest work is being performed by the public servants who keep the business of government operating for our entire community,” DA Susan Cacace said in a statement. “But let this be a lesson to that small portion with ulterior motives: Your graft will be short-lived.
Shabani repaid $206,000 to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs Metro-North. He had stolen stacks of cash from the counting room at the train station between September 2024 and March 2025, taking it out of the station in plastic containers.
The case was investigated by MTA police, and when they searched Shabani’s car some of the stolen money was there along with hundreds of dollars worth of lottery tickets, the DA’s news release said.
Among the conditions of Shabani’s probation is that he receive treatment for gambling, according to state court records.
He had originally been charged with second-degree grand larceny, a more severe felony that could have landed him in prison for up to 15 years.
