Seven Vestal Fire Commissioner candidates are up for election, and residents within the fire district will have the chance to vote five of them in on Dec. 9.
The Vestal Fire District, established in 2024, encompasses around 53 square miles within the Town of Vestal, according to the district’s website, and is governed by a Board of Fire Commissioners.
The Board of Fire Commissioners is made up of five people who are “responsible for providing the necessary apparatus, facilities, and equipment to support the Fire Department in safeguarding life and property within the District.”
Seven candidates are up for election, including five incumbents, according to a Dec. 2 press release issued by the district. Here’s what to know about the voting process and eligibility.

How does the election process work?
All five seats are open on the board and, according to the district, the length of the term depends on the amount of votes a candidate receives.
Therefore, the candidate who receives the most votes will serve a five-year term, the candidate with the second most votes will serve a four-year term, the candidate with the third most votes will serve a three-year term, the candidate with the fourth most votes will serve a two-year term, and the candidate with the fifth most votes will serve a one-year term.

The voting process also includes the approval of a “possible sale of Tower 1,” according to the release, which is a “2002 elevated platform/aerial ladder truck that was recently replaced.”
Voting is required as the sale price may exceed $100,000.
