Dutchess County offering summer scholarships to attend Camp Nooteeming

Dutchess County’s Division of Youth Services is offering scholarships for income-eligible children to attend “Camp Sunny Days,” one of the three summer camp programs at Salt Point’s Camp Nooteeming.

The camp offers children ages 3 1/2 to 15 an outdoor summer camp experience on a 272-acre campus.

Applications for income-eligible families will cover the full cost of “Camp Sunny Days” for children entering first through sixth grade in the fall, not including extended care. A chart in the application shows families who are eligible — those earning up to 250% of the federal poverty level qualify for scholarships.

Scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and applications can be completed through the county’s online portal.

“Summer is just around the corner, and we have the perfect adventure waiting for our youth right here in Dutchess County,” Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino said in a statement. “I am thrilled to again partner with Supervisor Mary Albrecht and the Town of Pleasant Valley to bring ‘Camp Sunny Days’ to Camp Nooteeming, offering high-energy, age-specific programs packed with summer fun.”

On May 5, Dutchess County Comptroller Dan Aymar-Blair issued a special report regarding the county’s $4.2 million purchase of Camp Nooteeming in 2022, and suggested the county’s ownership of the 270.7-acre property in the Town of Pleasant Valley was not widely known to taxpayers.

“We are pleased to continue our successful partnership with Dutchess County to bring our popular ‘Camp Sunny Days’ back to Camp Nooteeming again this summer,” Town of Pleasant Valley Supervisor Mary Albrecht said in a statement.

The three Camp Nooteeming age-based options

While the county is only accepting applications for Camp Sunny Days, there are two other camper groups to learn about, including Camp Sunny Sprouts, for children 3 1/2 to 4 1/2, and Teen Trailblazers, for those entering seventh through ninth grade in the fall.

Of note, campers for Camp Sunny Sprouts must be potty-trained.

According to Pleasant Valley Recreation’s website, the days run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Early care is available from 7:30-9 a.m. and after care is available from 3-5 p.m., for an additional fee.

There are three two-week sessions for the summer. Session one runs from June 29 to July 10, session two goes from July 13-24, and session three ends the season running from July 27 to Aug. 7.

Additionally, transportation is not provided and children should bring snacks and a packed lunch.

“Our camp programs offer wonderful opportunities for children to stay active, build friendships and grow in confidence, all in a beautiful outdoor setting,” Albrecht said.
