One male shooting victim and the alleged shooter were both taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica, where both were listed in stable condition at 3:30 a.m. the next morning, the chief said.

Herkimer officers were first dispatched to the area around the Herkimer Burger King around 10:40 p.m. on Thursday, Aug 14, Jory said. More information then came in indicating the incident might have actually taken place on the 100 block of North Main St., he said.

Officers then noticed several people standing near the Endzone Pub & Grub at 129 North Main St. and a vehicle parked diagonally in front of the pub, heading in the wrong direction. They found a male standing near the vehicle, who had been shot, and another male lying on the ground in front of the vehicle, who turned out to be the alleged shooter, Jory said.

That’s when officers were told that a bystander had used his vehicle to stop the shooter, “most likely preventing further shots being fired at the victim as well as toward several patrons seated in front of the establishment,” Jory said.

An officer tended to the shooting victim until the Herkimer Fire Department and the Mohawk Valley Ambulance Corps arrived. A handgun was found at the scene, Jory said.

Upon investigation, officers found out that the incident actually began near the bus stop at the intersection of Albany Street and North Main Street, where they found more evidence, Jory said.

According to authorities, Craig Turner, 52, homeless was charged with the shooting. He was charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault with a firearm, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weaon, four counts of first-degree reckless endangerment and two counts of second-degree menecing.

Police and an Evidence Specialist processed the scene.  During the course of the investigation, it was learned that the incident began near the bus stop on Albany St at the intersection of N Main St.  Officers then searched the area and secured additional evidence.

The police asked for assistance from their crisis intervention worker from the Mobile Crisis Assessment Team for witnesses given the traumatic nature of the incident, Jory said.

Turner and the victim listed as in stable condition at the hospital, police said.

More information will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.
