Buffalo man killed in NY Thruway crash in Erie County

A Buffalo man was killed early Sunday in a crash involving a tractor-trailer on the New York State Thruway in Erie County, according to New York State Police.

The collision occurred around 4:33 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 in the town of Evans.

Guide rail impaled car after collision

State police said Andre R. Akin, 33, of Buffalo, was driving a 2023 Kia sedan in the passing lane when the vehicle drifted into the driving lane and collided with a 2025 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

Investigators said both vehicles traveled onto the south shoulder and struck a guide rail. The tractor-trailer partially sheared off the guide rail, which then impaled the Kia.

Akin was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tractor-trailer driver, Dru Montae Chism, 28, of Belleville, Illinois, was transported to Erie County Medical Center with minor injuries. Police said Chism showed no signs of impairment.

Thruway closed for investigation

The crash closed all eastbound lanes of the Thruway for several hours while investigators conducted a collision reconstruction.

Traffic was diverted at Exit 57A (Eden-Angola) before the roadway reopened. The right lane remained closed for additional time to allow crews to remove the vehicles and clear the scene.

State police were assisted by the Troop T Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, Troop A Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Troop A Collision Reconstruction Unit, the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Evans Police Department and Evans Center Ambulance.
