NY Thruway in Nyack reopened after major tractor-trailer fire and delays

Traffic on I-87 in Nyack has been cleared after hours of delays during the morning commute Thursday, March 12, when an 18-wheel tractor-trailer caught fire near Exit 11 near the Mario Cuomo Bridge.

According to the New York State Police, the truck caught fire around 3:30 a.m. on the southbound lanes of I-87 near Route 9W and the entrance to the Mario Cuomo Bridge.

The truck, which was owned by Costco, was fully engulfed in flames. No injuries were reported.

The right and center southbound lanes of the Thruway were closed for over seven hours as emergency crews attempted to put out the fire and remove the 18-wheeler from the roadway safely.

Traffic delays spanned from Exit 11 to Exit 13 near the entrance to the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Clarkstown, as heavy fog also affected visibility in the area. By 10:15 a.m., State Police said the truck had been cleared from the roadway and traffic had returned to normal.
