The New York Jets will report to training camp next week. The Aaron Glenn era will officially begin once his first iteration of the Jets hits the practice field. General manager Darren Mougey has worked vigorously to reshape the roster amidst a culture-driven rebuild.
The Jets remain in the early stages of their rebuild. Bleacher Report recently wrote an article outlining every team’s financial situation heading into camp, while also posing some roster-related questions. The Jets could address those concerns via quality practice sessions at camp.
“Can the Jets’ passing game be good enough to threaten defenses,” is the question Alex Ballentine poses while noting the Jets possess $37 million in current cap space. It’s fair to question the Jets’ air attack. New starting quarterback Justin Fields is a run-first QB. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson, fresh off a newly-minted extension, is the only proven pass catcher on the team.
“The question, as it has been with Fields, is how much can he do as a passer.”
Ballentine goes on to acknowledge that wide receiver, interior defensive line, and quarterback are the three biggest question marks on the roster. Safety and cornerback round out the preseason top-five needs. These are fair assessments.
The Jets hope a pass catcher emerges opposite Wilson. Rookies Mason Taylor and Arian Smith, alongside veterans Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard, are in the mix. Quinnen Williams spearheads the interior d-line group without another proven asset on the depth chart. Brandon Stephens, rookie Azareye’h Thomas, and Isaiah Oliver are the cornerbacks next to Sauce Gardner. Andre Cisco and Tony Adams will attempt to form a league-average duo at safety.
These issues will be worth monitoring throughout training camp.
