Bill Belichick, the legendary coach now navigating his first season at North Carolina, deflected questions about the New York Giants’ head-coaching opening, focusing on the task at hand.
During a Tuesday press conference ahead of the Tar Heels’ matchup with Wake Forest, Belichick was pressed on speculation linking him to his former team.
“Getting ready for Wake Forest, that’s all I got this week,” he said curtly, via ESPN.
When probed further, the 73-year-old Belichick elaborated.
“I’ve been asked about it from time to time. Look, I’ve been down this road before,” he said. “I’m focused on Wake Forest, that’s it. That’s my commitment to this team. This week it’s Wake Forest, next week it’s that opponent, and so forth. I’m here to do the best for this team.”
The inquiry stems from a recent report by long-time NFL insider Gary Myers, who claimed Belichick would accept the Giants job “in a second.”
Myers highlighted Belichick’s deep emotional ties to New York, where he began his NFL career in 1979 and served as defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells, orchestrating victories in Super Bowls XXI (1986) and XXV (1990).
At UNC, Belichick has guided the Tar Heels to a 4-5 record with back-to-back wins. He frequently invokes Giants Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, a UNC alum who attended the season opener against TCU.
A potential return would require a $1 million buyout from Belichick post-season, but his priority remains clear: Tar Heel football, one opponent at a time.
…At least for now.
