Are Giants currently wearing their best and worst uniforms in history?

In a recent examination of uniform histories across the NFL, The Athletic identified the New York Giants as a team whose current options include both standout and disappointing designs from a franchise perspective.

The white Color Rush uniforms, in use since 2016, were cited as the best in team history. These feature a brighter white base and blue numbers that stand out sharply, evoking the classic road looks associated with the successful 1980s and 1990s eras.

The white looks brighter and the blue numbers pop on these throwbacks to their 1980s and 1990s uniforms. The Giants need to go back to these as their full-time road unis.

By contrast, the current road uniforms, worn since 2012, were labeled the weakest. The introduction of gray pants in place of traditional white created a more subdued appearance, while red numbers and socks on the jerseys were seen as a poor fit for a franchise long identified as Big Blue, despite red appearing in some early historical versions of the uniform.

The Giants’ road uniforms took a major step back when they replaced white pants with drab gray. And while I understand red was featured on the uniforms in the franchise’s early days, I don’t like the red numbers/socks on the road jerseys for “Big Blue.”

This assessment comes against a backdrop of longstanding fan discussions about other Giants designs. The alternate red jerseys worn from 2004 to 2007 continue to divide opinions, with some viewing them fondly and others remaining unconvinced.

The Century Red throwbacks introduced for the 2024 centennial season drew particularly sharp criticism from many supporters, analysts, and players, who felt the commemorative look missed the mark.

A smaller but dedicated group of fans maintains strong affection for the 1975 uniforms, especially the helmet. That season featured a one-year-only design with distinctive striping and a stylized logo that stood apart from surrounding years. Often described in nostalgic terms for its bold, era-specific character, the look was never repeated after the team finished 5-9.

Uniform preferences remain deeply personal, shaped by memories of on-field success, design details, and generational connections. While The Athletic highlighted clear strengths in one current white combination and notable shortcomings in the road set, the broader conversation among Giants followers shows that opinions on the franchise’s visual identity continue to evolve.
