Each Independence Day is a celebration of pride and patriotism. But next year will be something special as the nation celebrates its 250th birthday.
And New York? It’s got some spectacular events planned for July 4, 2026.
America’s bicentennial celebration in 1976 brought a year’s worth of commemorations, special offers and celebrations leading up to a massive nationwide party in July. President Donald Trump has said Americans can expect much of the same through the next year, with a celebration that will reach “extraordinary” levels.
The president is set to visit Iowa later this month to kick off events leading up to America’s 250th birthday, marking his first visit to the first-in-the-nation GOP caucus state since his return to the White House.
When is America 250?
America will celebrate its semiquincentennial throughout 2026, culminating on Independence Day.
How old is the United States?
The U.S. Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence 249 years ago, on July 4, 1776.
What America 250 events are scheduled?
In January, Trump signed an executive order that created Task Force 250.
As outlined by the order and headed by Trump, Task Force 250 is responsible for planning and executing “an extraordinary celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence” on July 4, 2026. The task force is also responsible for the creation of the National Garden of American Heroes, a sculpture garden first proposed by the president in 2020 that is scheduled to open in July 2026.
What 250th events are set for New York?
A monumental celebration – dubbed Sail4th 250 – is set for July 3 to 8, 2026 in the Port of New York and Port of New Jersey. The six-day event is expected to be the largest international flotilla of tall ships and naval vessels. More than 30 tall ships from around the globe are expected. The event is expected to draw 8 to 10 million people in the 15-mile shoreline.
“New York has played an immense and vital role in our country’s journey to independence – nearly a third of American Revolution battles were fought on New York soil – and the subsequent 250 years of American history,” the New York state tourism site iloveny.com notes.
Although no official 2026 programs are listed to date, Fort Ticonderoga in Essex County is a historic landmark and key military site of the 18th century and kicks of the yearlong event this year with a reenactment event this summer, ahead of the semiquincentennial celebration. Some of the 2025 events are listed on the official website for the celebration – America250.org.
Who is behind America 250?
The United States Semiquincentennial, also known as America250, is a nonprofit dedicated to the celebration of the 250th anniversary across the country. The America250 site lists more than a dozen corporate partners, including Amazon, Coca-Cola, Lockheed Martin and Walmart, and has information on events scheduled throughout the nation.
