“Over the past year, the administration has worked diligently to secure the necessary equipment, training, and resources needed to bring the unit back into service after it was previously eliminated,” Rome city officials said in a statement.

What do police K9 units do?

Police K9 units play a vital role in modern law enforcement operations.

Highly trained police dogs assist officers with narcotics detection, suspect tracking and apprehension, search and rescue operations, evidence recovery, and community engagement initiatives. These specialized teams not only improve operational effectiveness and officer safety, but also help foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the community through demonstrations and outreach programs.

Lanigan emphasized the importance of strong community partnerships in helping restore the unit and strengthen public safety efforts throughout the city.

“We are incredibly grateful to Adirondack Bank for their generous support of our K9 Unit,” said Lanigan in the statement. “This donation demonstrates Adirondack Bank’s continued commitment to the city of Rome and to the safety and well-being of our residents. K9 Units are an invaluable resource for local law enforcement, providing critical assistance in protecting our community, supporting officers in the field, and enhancing public safety operations. Partnerships like this make a meaningful difference, and we sincerely appreciate Adirondack Bank’s investment in our city.”
