24 all-stars in Section 4 advance to NYSPHSAA bowling championship

Section 4’s most prominent bowlers competed in a state-qualifying tournament over the weekend to determine which teams and athletes advance to the NYSPHSAA Division 1 and Division 2 bowling championships in Syracuse in March.

The boys’ tournament crowned Corning as the first-place winner in Division 1, earning their spot in the state championship with a total pinfall of 9,190. For Division 2, Sidney/Unatego captured the team title with an 8,836 total. Binghamton’s senior star bowler, Dominick Bernthon, was named No. 1 on the Section 4 Division 1 all-star team with a total of 2,049. Division 2 named Landon Butenko (Chenango Forks) as the group’s top bowler, who had a total of 2,186.

Elmira led the team standings in the Division 1 girls tournament with a total pinfall of 7,293, while Windsor topped Division 2 with a final total of 7,544. Kylie Downing of Corning topped the Division 1 all-star team with a 1,686 total pinfall, which was followed closely by Haley Peters (Binghamton), who had 1,684. Tioga’s Kelsey Helmich stood out in Division 2 with a total of 1,759.
