WILLIS – Avery Turk’s first instinct was to go right.
She encountered resistance in that direction so twirled in the other direction.
“I just smacked it with my left foot,” she said.
The shot didn’t have much force behind it, but the direction was perfect. It trickled into the net for the only goal in New Boston Huron’s 1-0 victory over Mason in the regional semifinals on Thursday, June 4.
Turk admitted that she didn’t expect to score on the shot with 19:59 left in the second half.
“I looked up and it wasn’t in yet, but the goalie couldn’t get there,” Turk said. “It was placed right.”
It wasn’t the prettiest goal Turk has ever scored, but it was the one the sent the Chiefs into the state semifinals for the second year in a row.
“This means a lot,” Turk said. “We are really excited. I was telling the team, I didn’t want this to my last game as a senior.”
Huron coach Matt Lividini was delighted to see his team win its second consecutive regional crown.
“This is so good,” he said. “So many wrote us off because we graduated 11 seniors. They said we were a one-hit wonder.”
The Chiefs were a one-goal wonder Thursday because of great play by their rebuilt defense.
Senior Nhi Vu leads the defense backline with help from junior Kayla Christesen, sophomores Maiya Thomas and Leah Purcell and freshman Lillie Susewitz.
“They were so good,” Turk said of the defense. “That’s what they have been working on all season. We have so many underclassmen back there. … They have worked really hard to mesh.”
The next step for Huron is the state semifinals against Bloomfield Hills Marian at Waterford Kettering at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10.
