The Red Wings suffered a major setback on Thursday with news that Dylan Larkin wants out of Detroit.
The 29-year-old captain has requested a traded, according to Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada and Darren Dreger of Sportsnet.
Could a Larkin trade put the Wings into the 2027 NHL Draft Lottery?
“Without a doubt,” Ted Kulfan said on OctoPulse, the Detroit News-Detroit Red Wings podcast. “As we sit here today and who knows what the return package will be, how do you become a better team losing Dylan Larkin?”
Kulfan said GM Steve Yzerman is in a difficult situation, trying to get equal value for a player who also has a no-trade clause.
“You can’t really push Steve Yzerman into a corner,” he said. “He’s going to wait until he gets the deal he wants. Who knows how long that will take? I wouldn’t expect this to come to an ending any time soon.
“It’s not going to help overnight. I would be shocked if it happens before the draft. Timeline? I don’t think there really is one. When it happens, it happens. Hopefully before the season starts.”
Kulfan said there are still a lot of unanswered questions for Larkin as well.
“What happens to Larkin?” he said. “Does he hold out? Does he play? If he plays, that will make it almost an unbearable situation. There will be questions every day about the roster, the lineup.”
