A 30-year-old Rochester woman told police she was driving on Ames Street, just north of Interstate 490, when she stopped her Jeep because of a possible mechanical issue, Rochester Police Lt. Jeffrey Pursel said.

After she got out of the vehicle to inspect it, a woman pushed her to the ground, Pursel said. The victim told police that at least one man then got into her Jeep and drove away just before 1 a.m.

Stolen Jeep found after police chase

About 15 minutes later, officers spotted the stolen Jeep on North Plymouth Avenue near Lyell Avenue and attempted to pull the vehicle over, Pursel said.

The driver did not stop, leading to a brief police pursuit. The Jeep later crashed into a parked, unoccupied vehicle on Warner Street, according to police.

Several people got out of the Jeep and fled the scene. Officers located and arrested one person, a 20-year-old Rochester man, Pursel said.

Charges filed, investigation continues

The man was charged with second-degree robbery and third-degree grand larceny, both felonies.

Police continue to investigate the carjacking and are working to identify other people involved. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or contact the Rochester Police Department.
